Region
Besarabia is a historical region in the southwest of Ukraine, bordering Moldova and Romania. It is bounded by the Dnister River flowing into the Dnister Estuary on one side and the Danube River into the Black Sea on the other. It's a sunny steppe region with fertile soils, estuaries, and lakes. There are numerous vineyards, rice fields, and rare bird species here. Ancient Greek cities stood on these lands, and many tribes settled here. Today, the region is ethnically diverse: for example, large communities of Bulgarians, Albanians, and Gagauzes live here. They engage in farming and fishing and protect natural parks. One of the largest cities in the region is Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, known for its Akkerman Fortress.
