Every year the Ukraїner expedition covers at least 30 thousand kilometers around Ukraine, exploring the most interesting locations and personalities from the east to the west, from the south to the north. Every year we prepare a summary of all stories we shot, so we summed up the year of 2018. What kind of Ukraine do you know and see it every day? We will try to show it to you from a slightly different angle with the help of photos.

The Ukraїner had 6 expeditions during 2018, we had two live streams from Malanka carnival in Vashkivtsi and Krasnoyilsk, we worked with more than a dozen photographers. In this story, you will see a small part of the photos taken in different regions of Ukraine. We collected money for the trip to Greece for the sculptor Valeriy and currently, we are working on making a documentary feature about it. Our photos get uploaded first of all to our official account Instagram and Facebook-page.

Malanka carnival in Krasnoyilsk and Vashkivtsi

The first trip of the Ukraїner team in 2018 was an expedition to Vashkivtsi and Krasnoyilsk to shoot a celebration of Malanka (a traditional carnival). We split into two teams, the story and the video about Krasnoyilsk Malanka is already released on Ukraїner site (now available in Ukrainian), and the story about Vashkivtsi Malanka will come out in 2019.

A group of Malanka participants in masks takes a photo next to the Christmas tree in the centre of Krasnoyilsk village situated on the border with Romania. The 13th of January, 2018.

Valeriy’s trip

At the end of 2017, 850 philanthropists donated over 110 thousand hryvnias after this post on Facebook for a trip of the sculptor from the village Panasivka to Greece. At the beginning of January, the Ukraїner team started realizing this idea but faced a problem: Valeriy did not have even a national passport. In a couple of months we prepared all the paperwork and in March the trip took place.

Valeriy, stoked by Greek culture, dreamt all his life to travel there. He received this opportunity after our story about him was published. The money needed for the trip had been collected within three hours. However, due to some circumstances, the budget of the trip increased once and again: you can learn about some of them from the story, you will learn about the others from the movie that we are currently working on.

Khortytsia is the biggest island on Dnipro. It is a unique natural and historic complex. In 2007, Khortytsia got a title of the one of “7 Wonders Of Ukraine”. The island is 12 km in length and 2.5 km in width, it consists of steppes, meadows, oak, and needle-leaved forests. The most popular place on the island is the historic cultural complex “Zaporizhian Sich” that models the atmosphere of the Cossack times. Apart from that, there are nine settlements on the island where 2 thousand people reside.

Naddniprianshchyna

Between Zaporizhzhia and Naddniprianshchyna we had a small break in shooting and for three weeks we have immersed in the central region of Ukraine, Kyiv is part of it. However, there were so many stories connected to it that we decided to create a separate series of stories about Kyiv after the main round of expeditions.

Slobozhanshchyna

Slobozhanshchyna is one of the largest regions of the east that includes part of the much later formed region Donbas and all of Kharkiv and partially Sumy regions. The soviet occupation started from these very lands that is why Kharkiv is still erroneously called according to the Soviet cliche “the first capital”, however, this region carries Ukrainian authenticity, the art of kobza playing, Cossack traditions, chalk hills, and modern architecture.

The last 16th region of the expedition was Halychyna. The concentration of stories and locations in this region was probably the highest. It was really hard to pick personalities for our stories among all those amazing people of Halychyna.

The first time it was mentioned in historical sources back in 1327.

Olesk caste is famous in Polish history as a place where a grandson of Jan Daniłowicz, the future king of Poland John III Sobieski, was born in 1629. During his reign the castle got a status of royal residence. During the times of soviet union, it was turned into a camp for captive soldiers and military warehouse.
